This magnificent masterpiece incorporates the most fabulous & highly prized timbers throughout, including one of the most incredible Thuya Wood quarter veneered oval tops you could ever see, highlighting the richest, warmest colour & the most exceptional of figuring. Banded with gorgeous Circassian walnut, tulipwood and with satinwood, Holly & Ebony inlays. This palatial table has a superbly carved solid Goncalo Alves scrolled leg quadripartite base with concealed castors, adorned throughout with superb crisply cast ormolu mounts & with a crowning band of Thuya Wood, bordered by Satinwood & Holly line inlays and a truly stunning fluted central column.
A Museum & exhibition quality masterpiece. In excellent condition commensurate with its age & use.
Thuya wood is from the Thuya tree ( Tetraclinis articulata in Latin and Araar in Moroccan). This Biblical tree is a conifer from the Cedar family and is exclusively native to Morocco. Thuya wood was highly praised by Romans and Greeks and its oils were used in religious rituals and ceremonies. The veneer used on this most important of tables is the absolute finest you could ever see.
Goncalo Alves is a Brazilian wood also known as Albuera, Tigerwood and Zebrawood, a name that underscores this hardwood's often dramatic contrasting color scheme. In the early 19th century it cost 40% more than Mahogany. Furniture created using this expensive and beautiful timber are most often now regarded as among the finest and most important works of the period.
Holland & Sons, the Royal Cabinetmakers, were originally founded in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland, they were always at the forefront of fashion, and collaborated with many of England’s best furniture and decorative art designers. This exceptional centre table demonstrates the variety of materials they used and their fashionable taste for English furniture in the French style. They occupied premises in London’s prestigious Mayfair neighbourhood at 23 Mount Street and employed over 350 people, an extraordinary number of staff for a furniture maker of the time. The firm participated in all of the esteemed International Exhibitions of the 19th century, winning a prize at the 1851 Great Exhibition for a bookcase. Their early success was gained through commissions for private clubs and, most significantly, for the Royal Family. Holland & Sons were granted the honour of the Royal Warrant of Appointment during the reign of Queen Victoria, which enabled them to advertise that their services and products were of exceptional quality. They assisted in the decoration and furnishing of the Royal residences at Osborne House, Sandringham, Balmoral, Windsor Castle and the apartments of the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House. They also worked extensively for the British Government, for whom they executed over three hundred separate commissions, including for the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament ), the Victoria and Albert Museum and even the State funeral of the Duke of Wellington. Among their private commissions was a celebrated suite of bedroom furniture for the diamond entrepreneur Sir Harold Wernher at Luton Hoo, one of England’s finest stately homes and estates. Many of the pieces they provided were of the finest quality, utilizing beautifully grained woods and refined ornamentation, such as shown in this magnificent centre table.
The powerful elegance, exquisite design, exotic timbers, construction & rarity of this Museum quality table cannot be overstated. It is the absolute finest quality from the Royal Cabinetmakers.
