About the Item

José Zanine Caldas (1919–2001) Coffee Table (Unique Piece), c. 1970 Hardwood (Vinhático) Dimensions: 34 × 75 × 86 cm (13 39/100 × 29 53/100 × 33 43/50 in) This unique coffee table, created by José Zanine Caldas in the 1970s, is a significant example of his "Móveis Denúncia" ("Protest Furniture") series. Hand-sculpted from solid Vinhático wood, a native Brazilian hardwood, the piece embodies Zanine’s organic and raw aesthetic, emphasizing the natural form and texture of the material. The circular composition and expressive carving techniques reflect his deep concern for the environment and critique of the industrial destruction of Brazil’s native forests. Each work from this series is a sculptural manifesto, combining functionality with a powerful environmental message. This table, with its bold and tactile presence, perfectly illustrates Zanine’s philosophy of respecting nature through design. Provenance: Important Brazilian private collection. Literature: Alberto, Vincente; Vasconcellos, Marcelo. Móvel Moderno Brasileiro. Editora Olhares, São Paulo, 2017.
