About the Item

Rare small table mod. 1774 designed by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte in 1958. Burnished brass frame, polished brass inserts, colored concave mirrored crystal, thick transparent crystal top. Excellent condition, engraved Fontana Italy mark. A masterpiece of artistic and manual execution this rare coffee table features a concave mirror that amplifies visual perception when looking inside, in the rare orange-colored version, extensively documented in the bibliography of F. Deboni, Fontana Arte: Gio Ponti, Pietro Chiesa, Max Ingrand, fig. 409, Allemandi, 2012. A celebrated master of art glass, Max Ingrand grew up admiring the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral, his first real source of inspiration. Through continuous research into acid and sand etching techniques, he achieved a masterful refinement of craft. He came to the artistic direction of Fontana Arte in the mid-1950s, becoming the leading figure in the transition to industrial production and licensing some of the most original solutions ever produced. Fontana Arte is an Italian company founded in Milan, Italy in 1932 by Luigi Fontana and Giò Ponti and specializes in glass processing and the manufacture of furniture accessories. It is known for working with curved crystal and producing lighting fixtures, becoming over the years the 'most prominent company for Italian design.
