Japanese Meiji Period Carved Desk Circa 1900

About the Item

A Japanese Meiji period writing desk dating from the late 19th century, exquisitely hand-carved, lacquered hardwood. An enchanting array of intricate carvings, including high-relief depictions of dragons, floral motifs, and animals, adorns the surface of this desk, each element reflecting the cultural richness of Meiji-era Japan. Two upper cabinets, embellished with deeply carved dragon motifs, anchor the piece, symbolising protection and strength. Between them, open shelving rests beneath a carved foliate crest, adding both functionality and sculptural elegance. The lower section is adorned with high-relief carvings of natural elements: branches laden with fruit, delicate leaves, and animal figures that infuse the desk’s structure with a sense of life. Each drawer front features finely carved embellishments of fruit and foliage, while the drawer pulls integrate seamlessly into the organic design, maintaining a natural flow. Elegant cabriole legs showcase the artisan's attention to lifelike detail, with one leg featuring the carved figure of a monkey climbing upwards, evoking a sense of movement and playful charm. Such naturalistic detail is characteristic of the Meiji period’s fascination with Western aesthetics, while remaining firmly rooted in Japanese symbolism. Likely crafted as a status piece for a wealthy household or a scholar’s study, the desk combines beauty with practicality. Its intricate detailing captures both the mythological and natural worlds, making it a rare example of Japanese antique furniture that underscores the cultural significance of flora, fauna, and mythology in Japanese art.
