Montalcini & Pagano desk for Cartiere Giacomo Bosso, Italy 1920s
About the Item
Giuseppe Pagano (1896-1945) and Gino Levi Montalcini (1902-1974) designed this exquisite desk in the 1920s as part of a commissioned project for the Gualino offices in Turin. The project received much critical acclaim; it was regarded as one of the purist expressions of the rationalist movement, and of such historic architectural importance that it dominated an entire issue of Gio Ponti’s Domus magazine in 1930.
The desk’s boxy aesthetic is offset by more delicate, inset feet. Its wood is covered in Buxus
paper, an innovative material that broke new ground in its time. The result is a highly
patterned, natural surface that is both intricate and lightweight.

Grace Prince Held Absence No.1 Desk UK, 2025
Located in London, GB
Cast bronze, low-iron glass, iron and polished stainless steel.
The bronze cast of a found wood fragment appears held in an assemblage of rigidity and lightness. The structure is an interplay of rationalist ironwork and fine, almost ethereal polished steel rods.
The piece is part of Held Absence, Grace Prince’s largest furniture collection to date addressing a long-held fascination with absence and fragility. The pieces develop the designer’s free, gestural approach into six assemblages in bronze, steel and wood. Designed exclusively for Béton Brut, the works emerged from a period spent living in a traditional house just north of Kyoto. The collection is handmade to order in 12 weeks.
Grace Prince (born in London, 1992) is a multidisciplinary designer based between Zürich, Milan and London. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, she worked as the assistant designer to Vincenzo De Cotiis...
