A well designed superior quality Anglo-Japanese oak desk
About the Item
A well designed superior quality Anglo-Japanese oak desk (attributed) to E W Godwin. The construction of this desk is pure architectural, the corners of the aprons below the work surface have subtle angled joints uniting the legs at the top, identical to the way the legs are united on Godwin's 'Florence Cabinet' made by Art Furniture in 1871. The angled side supports below have bevelled edges and are mitred into the legs and also into the top rails below the drawers and side aprons. The upper legs have chamfered edges with bird beak end details and short turnings down to the feet. The castellated shield style escutcheons are reminiscent of the escutcheons on the Ionides Cabinet Godwin designed for Luke Ionides in 1871, with triangular handle drops and diamond style back plates. Height 30, Width 48 1/2, Depth 36". Circa 1870.

View AllRare Walnut Desk in the Anglo-Japanese Style Designed by Thomas Jeckyll
By Charles Hindley & Sons, Thomas Jeckyll
Located in London, GB
A fine and rare walnut desk in the Anglo-Japanese style designed by Thomas Jeckyll and made by Charles Hindley and Sons.
“Thomas Jeckyll designed some of the earliest surviving furniture inspired in decoration if not in form- by interest in Japan” (Cooper p. 138).
As can be seen on the desk, the style and design details such as the ‘Key’ design, the Japanese style lacquered door panels, the cross hatching and circle design on the brass door brackets, all combine to create a unique example of Jeckyll’s Anglo-Japanese work.
The ‘Key’ design on the desk appears on many of Jeckyll’s designs including the cast iron grates and fenders made by Barnard, Bishop and Barnards and on furniture designed for ‘Alecco’ Ionides for his home at no1 Holland Park, London in circa 1875. The ‘Peacock’ dining...
