About the Item

This table is STUNNING-- it's French, art deco and features a highly figured rosewood veneer, expertly book-matched to create a striking pattern on the tabletop-- that extends downward to the sides of the table-top, then the book-matched rosewood extends down  the side(s) as well as the inside(s) of the U shaped trestle, all the way to the base of the piece. Book-matched all around-- topped with a solid stainless steel accent and two steel additional accents tacked onto both sides at the bottom of the table. We also had this table professionally restored and given the full French treatment as well as a French polish. (French polishing is a highly respected, labor-intensive wood finishing technique that creates an incredibly luxurious, high-gloss, and deep finish. The process involves a skilled artisan hand-rubbing dozens of thin coats of shellac onto wood, a meticulous and time-consuming process that can take many hours. This significant investment of expert labor makes French polishing far more expensive than modern finishes, but the result is a beautiful, mirror-like surface that exquisitely highlights the wood's natural grain, making it the finish of choice for high-end antique and custom furniture. It feels silky-smooth and looks almost liquid in depth. This is also why the top of the table is hard to photograph and is so liquid shiny.) Looking underneath the table, you can see the construction is solid wood, and finished. Whoever crafted this table not only spent a boatload of cash on the materials, they were an expert craftsman who had an almost insane passion for their craft-- making sure that this table was just as gorgeous on the inside as it was on the outside.  I have spent hours going through ephemera-- all 18 volumes of Ensembles Mobiliers, combing through dozens of issues of Mobilier et Décoration on Gallica, and the closest table I could match was by French Maison Gouffé. I saw some similar tables also by Jules Leleu as well as Maurice Dufrène, but none were exact matches. If I had it my way, I would put this table aside and continue researching until I could pinpoint the exact designer and provide documentation, but my partner won't have it. I'm running a gallery, not a museum. So here's your chance to purchase one of the finest pieces of furniture I've ever owned at my current-- "I can't ID this piece yet," price.

Percival Lafer Folding Rosewood Coffee Table, 1970s
By Percival Lafer
Located in Culver City, CA
This coffee table is fabulous! Designed by Percival Lafer a Brazilian furniture designer known for his innovative and modern designs. One of his most iconic creations is the Percival Lafer folding table, which was first introduced in the 1970s. Coming in a number of sizes, this is the large coffee table. The Percival Lafer folding tables are versatile functional pieces of furniture that can be used in a variety of settings. It is designed to be lightweight and easy to move, with a simple folding mechanism that allows it to be set up or stored away quickly and easily. The table features a sleek and minimalist design, with a rosewood parquette type design that featured different pieces of rosewood arranged at different heights, creating an uneven, heavily textured, almost brutalist look-- topped with glass. This eye catching design is one of his most iconic designs. A wonderful piece that can be easily folded and stored away if necessary. This table would look incredible in any mid century modern, Brazilian modern, or contemporary home. Place both tables together to have a larger functional coffee table. We currently have this table in the gallery alongside a Sergio Rodrigues sofa as well as a Jorge Zalszupin mesa...
