About the Item

A George II period, Cuban mahogany oval dining table, circa 1730. Featuring a thick, solid and very well figured, mahogany top in oval form. Constructed from 3 leaves of the earliest, dense, highest quality, heavy Cuban mahogany. The drop leaves are supported by single gatelegs, and the table is raised on a sub-structure of turned tapering legs on off-set pad feet. Cuban Mahogany is the king of all woods. Prized for its density, weight, ability to avoid rot, and its natural beauty. Gone from commercial availability by the end of the 18th century. Pieces of this standard are few and far between. An excellent early table in good condition. Some minor repairs. Sensitively cleaned, waxed and now very much ready for use. Dimensions: This table measures approximately 71 cm (28") tall, 149.25 cm (58.75") wide leaves up, and 50 cm (19.75") wide leaves down, 138.5 cm (54.5") deep. Condition: Please see the pictures for details of the items condition. - This table is in good condition, commensurate with its age, and is structurally very sound and sturdy. The table came into us and needed a few small repairs. As conservators of period furniture, we wanted to maintain as much originality as possible whilst balancing that with making the table structurally sound and useable. Two of the original cast iron hinges were broken beyond repair. We sourced period correct matching ones. The broken hinges had caused a little damage to the rule joints above where they were located. Where the damage needed to be repaired we did so sympathetically. Where the damage wasn't causing any structural issues we left. This is why you will see gap above one hinge and small repair above another. There was an existing repair to the table surface above one of the hinges on the leaf side. This was sound and although not perfectly flat, was all original timber with original polish in place, so this was left. We found an old repair on the top of one one of the gate legs. This was mostly hidden from view and was of a very good standard, and although it have never been polished it was decided to leave it exactly as is was. Other than tightening a few joints and wax polishing that was the extent of the work. This table has never been French polished. The marks and blemishes are all in keeping with use, and are now all well wax polished over. Lovely aged colour. Attractive aged patina throughout. Lovely original surface, never been refinished. The work undertaken as explained above. This has been through the workshop and sensitively cleaned, waxed and is now ready for use. - As with all vintage & antique furniture there will be signs of use, marks, wear & tear, etc.
