This stunning circular dining table is resplendent in macassar veneer arranged in a starburst pattern. The design consists of 8 pie-shaped wedges formed from 32 pieces of veneer. Macassar, a subspecies of ebony, was selected for its straight grain, high striation, and exceptional hardness. The base is pyramidal, with three tapered legs joined by curved lobes. The piece is truly a marvel of nature and human craftsmanship. The high-gloss lacquer finish accentuates the beauty of the wood. Hungarian furniture makers have been making fine veneered furniture since the Biedermeier era in the early 19th Century. Biedermeier furniture required high-tech (for the time) cutting tools and new application techniques. The technology transferred easily to Art Deco, a style that originated in France but also bloomed in 1930's Budapest. The same techniques are in use today, almost 100 years later. Hungarian Deco...
