Zanine Caldas Round 'Denuncia' Dining Table in Brazilian Hardwood

Price Upon Request

About

José Zanine Caldas, 'Denuncia' table, Brazilian wood, Brazil, 1970s Unique dining table designed and made by the Brazilian architect and designer José Zanine Caldas. The table is made of solid Brazilian hardwood, which makes this an incredible heavy, yet precious piece. This piece was crafted by Caldas in the 1970s, which was after the military coop. During this period, José Zanine Caldas faced the destruction of the Atlantic Forest and began carving solid furniture. He called the series of the furniture 'Móveis Denúncia', which means Furniture-Denunciation. He abandoned the rigid design aesthetics of Modernism. Reminiscent of Caldas’ work of the 1970s, the piece is highly sculptural and organic, and takes its full advantage of the cracks and natural curves of the wood. José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001) was born in Belmonte, Brazil. His designs are known for their raw, natural and sculptural qualities. Caldas was an autodidact and started his career as designer in the construction industry. He worked as a model builder for designers and architects including Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa and Oswaldo Arthur. In 1948 he founded the company Moveis Artisticos Z, and there he produced semi mass-produced plywood furniture, but after two years he decided to leave the company and return to his home state Bahia and went to live in the beach town Nova Vicosa. Here, he began to work with local materials, and combined the colonial aesthetic with the new modernist style. It was through his experience and development in style that is known to stay close to the truth of the material and that abandoned the rigid rules and objectivism of the Modernist era.
