About the Item

Decorate a wine cellar or den with this elegant antique side table. Created in France, circa 1870, the table stands on turned legs ending with an X stretcher and dressed with a central finial. Over a small drawer across the front, the surface is decorated with a large hand painted blue and white tile depicting a cabaret or tavern scene in the manner of David Teniers; the artwork is further protected with a clear glass top. The Napoleon III end table is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich blackened finish with a colorful top. A true keeper for blue and white lovers! David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was a Flemish Baroque painter, printmaker, draughtsman, miniaturist painter, staffage painter, copyist and art curator. He was an extremely versatile artist known for his prolific output. He was an innovator in a wide range of genres such as history painting, genre painting, landscape painting, portrait and still life. He is now best remembered as the leading Flemish genre painter of his day. Teniers is particularly known for developing the peasant genre, the tavern scene, pictures of collections and scenes with alchemists and physicians. 23"W x 19"D x 29.5"H.
