About the Item
A tall Amsterdam School/ Arts & Crafts pedestal in solid oak, 1920s to 1930s. The pedestal nearly comes up to one's shoulder which is quite extraordinary (most pedestals are around the 90 cm in height). It is handcrafted, woodcarved and has subtle black stained details. The feet have a characteristic Art Deco shape with sculptural forms. At the base the dimensions are 39 x 39 cm ( 15,4 inch). The top is 25 x 25 cm ( 9,8 inch).
Amsterdam School pedestals made great accent pieces and are sought after by interior designers and collectors of Dutch Art Deco Amsterdam School. It combines very well with more modern pieces as well as with antiques. Pictures taken in different types of natural light and angles to bring across a good impression of this piece.
The pedestal is in very good condition, lightly restored. A great accent piece on its own or with a object on top. Also very suitable as a plantstand, for instance to support a cascading fern or lipstickplant.
Background information Amsterdam School (1910-1940)
''Amsterdam School'' is a collective name for the exuberant, imaginative and innovative design style by a diverse group of Dutch architects, interior designers and sculptors. Influential architects and designers include Michel De Klerk, Hildo Krop, Piet Kramer en J.M. van der Meij.
The Amsterdam School embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognizable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre.
Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
