Chabot Side/Cocktail Table with Turned Curved Edges and Modern Cast Bronze Legs

$2,800per item

About

The Chabot side table presents a clean, modern, and sturdy surface to keep your drinks or devices close at hand. Though it has a minimal silhouette, the planetary swirls of the rare wood grain, the silky curves of the edges, and the texture of the sand-cast bronze offer a sensory treat. Beyond the obvious aesthetic presence of bronze, we decided to use heavy, cast legs so that any bounding pet or curious munchkin wouldn't disturb any beverage placed on it. The name Chabot (pronounced like 'chateau') is taken from the historical Northern California Chabot Observatory where scientists have been studying the heavens for over 100 years. The hardwood that is local to this region is rich in color and depth, and finished tables often bear more than a passing resemblance to the celestial bodies within the reach of our telescopes. Tops can vary in thickness from 2.5" to 3.5" and are generally sourced from the most interesting cuts of Claro walnut, Bay Laurel, Chinese elm, sycamore, Big Leaf maple, and other salvaged California hardwoods. Conventional hardwoods like cherry, walnut, maple, white oak, etc. can also be used. Our standard legs are cast in white bronze, which can then be patinated to a dark, weathered bronze color or a medium tone similar to brass. Sand texture from the casting process is left on the outside surfaces of the legs, with a satin polished inside surface. Additional alloys and finishes are available at an additional cost.

About the Maker

J. Rusten Furniture Studio

J. Rusten Furniture Studio was founded in 2002 by Jared Rusten to create compelling and enduring objects that awaken public and private space. The studio engages tradition’s best practices while pushing the craft of woodworking forward. Natural materials are elevated by composing them into simple, modern forms. Finishes are engineered to get better with age and communicate a sublime warmth and presence only possible with small scale production . Often, Jared and his team source rare and unique California hardwood species like Claro Walnut and Bay Laurel milled from fallen or displaced trees. ..... Adding its own vocabulary to the language of design, the studio has produced hundreds of original pieces of furniture for residences and commercial clients like Google, Vans, Github, and Levi’s, exhibiting work at numerous venues including the Harvard Graduate School of Design, S.F. Museum of Craft and Design, International Contemporary Furniture Fair, Pasadena Contemporary Art Museum, and has been featured in many print/digital publications like The New York Times, and Sunset Magazine ..... In 2016, the studio moved to Stockton, CA where Jared and his wife, Emily purchased a 100-year-old warehouse in the historic downtown. The ample space, proximity to fabricators, suppliers, and Stockton’s transportation nexus have allowed the studio to thrive with new designs and to better serve clients in California and beyond.
