Early 19th Century French Dough Box Storage Compartment
About the Item
Handsome and versatile, this antique oak side table combines provincial simplicity with warm natural finish. Hand-built in France in the early 1800s, the rectangular tabletop sits atop a deep storage compartment, originally used for storing rising dough, raised upon a sturdy frame. The trapezoid shape of the compartment creates a unique silhouette; the contour of the column legs adds a note of elegance, while broad stretcher blocks evoke solidity and strength. The surface of the wood has been carefully restored to reveal the delicate golden tone of the organic oak, inflected with an attractive silver grain.
