Two Story Mahogany Side Table
About the Item
This two story side table is made from mahogany wood with border inlays in a lighter colored wood.
The inspiration for this piece comes from Directorie Style, a 15 year period in late 18th Century France. The Directoire style inherited the classicism of the Louis XVI style, particularly through references to the Antique that even became ubiquitous thanks to, among other things, an ideological connivance. Royal luxury, aristocratic power and privilege- was condemned.
You can specifically see the reference in the curvature of the legs, and the inlays as they used basic shapes for tables and chairs and there was a revival of inlays. They used mostly solid wood for building furniture as other materials was seen as too bourgeois.
