19th Century Regency Rosewood Sofa Table, Attributed to John Mclean

Regency sofa table attributed to well known Regency furniture maker and designer, John Mclean, known for his ornate and formal application of brass mountings and employing highly figured hardwood, circa 1815. This table encompasses those elements with a beautifully grained color to the top and of outstanding quality; bordered by "satinwood crossbanding extending to the "D" shaped drop leaves and surrounding the entire tabletop. Fluted brass panels adorn each side of the brass-mounted drawers. Brass mounts decorate the legs on all four sides, while additional brass. Decorates the center turned stretcher. The legs are supported by brass square caps and castors. The two facing drawers serve for utility while the backside has similarly fitted "dummy" drawers. John Mclean lived from 1770-1825. A contemporary of Thomas Hope, the two were recognized as the best furniture cabinet makers of the Regency period, with quality, sophistication, and formal design their signature legacy. This table was at some point in time sold by Sloan's of New York City as evidenced by their coat of arms on the label on the right hand side of the top drawer (see image). Founded in 1843, W. & J. Sloan was the "go to" place of the elite; Rockefeller's, Whitney, Vanderbilt, etc. for high quality furnishings. They established their antiques department (ostensibly an antiques shop) in the late 19th century and sold Fine Art and furniture to the White House, The Breakers, and society's upper economic echelon. Dimensions: 28" high x 34 3/4" wide (closed, as in cover picture) (53 1/4" open)) x 25" deep.
