This sturdy, almost architectural Chinese table is is an excellent example of "scholar's furniture". Scholar's furniture is known for rounded frames that suggest tree trunks and a general lack of unnecessary adornment. The table's floating panel top is held by round corner posts that gracefully transform into square feet as they meet the ground. Arched spandrels connect the legs to the top, suggesting the roof of a building is held up by corner posts. Two drawers are held in the thick waist. We are delighted to offer for sale this super rare and very important original circa 1800 Chinese Chinoiserie refectory dining table. This table was owned by the wife of the Admiral who ran the naval base in Davenport in the south of England, it was sold at an estate sale maybe 5-6 years ago, since then it has resided in my care whilst I decide what to do with it It is a truly sublime and very important piece, I have never seen another of its type and in searching the internet can't find any other examples. The table is circa 1800 and in what looks to be oak or elm, it's hard to see as it's almost entirely covered.
