Bäst, 'Revolucion De Papel', 2003, Urban Art Print

About the Item

Bäst, 'Revolucion De Papel', 2003, Urban Art Print Published by P.O.W. (Pictures on Walls), London, who also published works by Banksy during the same period. Numbered in pencil with P.O.W. blind stamp. This print is unframed. Using collage to create what he calls “mutated characters” and “mutated scenes,” the Brooklyn-based street artist known as Bäst has been embellishing urban environments in New York and Europe with his wheat-pasted posters for more than 15 years. Inspired by early punk flyers, Bäst appropriates iconic images from 20th- and 21st-century mass culture, creating collages that mash up images such as classic cartoon characters or fast food branding, into biting satires of consumer culture. An integral part of the international street art scene, he is among the few artists to retain one of the first things to go with gallery recognition: anonymity. He had a successful under- and above-ground career, with both solo projects and collaborative ones with the urban collective FAILE and the designer Marc Jacobs. Since 2003 his work has been in numerous group shows from Japan to LA, to Colorado, New York, London and Berlin, with his exposure quickly increasing. 2005 saw his first New York solo exhibition at the Transplant Gallery, which also celebrated the release of his limited edition book, REVOLUTION DE PAPEL. From a gallery perspective, Bast's works on canvas appear to be a complete departure from what he presents on the street: they are aggressive and bold, offering a fresh take on Punk art and appropriated imagery from all media. Bast is credited with influencing the collective artist group FAILE, with whom he has collaborated with on numerous occasions. Such collaborations have been displayed on the streets as well as in joint exhibitions, namely Galerie Neurotitan Berlin in 2003, and New Image Art in Los Angeles in 2005. In August 2007, Bast returned to New Image Art for a solo exhibition, and is slated for another New York gallery appearance in Jonathan Levine Gallery's Project Room.

By Vivienne Westwood
Located in London, GB
An original one-off large format Polaroid photograph of Bob Geldoff & Jeanne Marine for the Vivienne Westwood Active Resistance limited edition book produced by Opus. Photographer Zenon Texeira. Signed by Bob Geldoff & Jeanne Marine in marker pen. Large-format polaroids are extremely rare and unique and as the name suggests, they are of a large scale, the visible image dimensions being 52 cm x 67 cm. It is an autographed and one-off, unreproducible photograph, as there is no negative. Large Format Polaroids: The Polaroid 20×24 camera is a very large instant camera made by Polaroid, with film plates that measure a nominal 20 by 24 inches. Throughout its history, it has been used by many famous photographers, including Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol. Ansel Adams also used the camera, notably to make the first official photographic Presidential portrait, of President Jimmy Carter in 1979. To celebrate Lady Gaga's new role as Creative Director of Polaroid, a portrait of her was shot with the 20×24 camera on June 30, 2010, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This is the actual one-off Large Format Polaroid Photo taken on one of three of these cameras in existence which are soon to be obsolete because no more of the photographic paper can be made. The rare Polaroid 20 x 24 camera was brought from Prague to Paris and London for three separate photo shoots for The Official Vivienne Westwood Opus. Featuring Vivienne Westwood’s family and friends wearing clothes from her stunning collections, 97 selected Polaroids, shot by Zenon Texeira in black-and-white, colour and sepia, are displayed in the Opus.
