About the Item

With an illustrator’s eye for graphic impact and a wry sense of humor, artist Yoko Tanaka uses only a paint brush and her imagination to conjure whimsical landscapes and playful encounters. Lingering in the surreal, her dreamlike paintings of human-animal hybrids are at once mischievous and melancholic, painted within a limited palette of soft, smoky tones that give her works a sense of stillness and otherworldliness. In this moody painting entitled "Encounter," black and white chess pieces are reimagined as preoccupied passerby, each shuffling past as they cross a checkered road. At the back of the board, two cloaked figures encounter each other face to face, both holding a paper airplane with nowhere left to throw it - perhaps a pair of stalemated pawns? The background of rolling hills is sparsely dotted with trees, mirroring the chess-piece figures, and creates a surreal, atmospheric landscape that fades into cloudy skies. "Encounter," 2005 Yoko Tanaka Acrylic on board. Framed. Additional Dimensions: Visible Painting: 21.75"W x 27.5"H
