This Georges Rouault (French, 1871–1958) framed etching, "Christ and the Children," will bring a sense of sophistication to your home! French expressionist and religious painter, Georges Rouault was the son of a cabinetmaker. Trained as a maker of stained-glass windows (1885-90) before studying at the School of Fine Arts in Paris where he was encouraged to develop his talent (1891-98). In 1895, he began to concentrate on Biblical themes in his paintings, etchings and lithographs. If you look at the photographs provided, you will see that the etching is dated 1935 in the bottom left corner as well as proof of purchase from 1967. This would make a perfect addition to your entryway, living room, office, or place of your choosing! The etching is in as found estate condition with Light surface scratches to frame but no significant defects to note.

Georges Rouault
Executed in 1937, Carlotta belongs to a group of portraits of members of society. Unlike Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec, who portrayed these individuals with pathos, Rouault’s approach was unapologetic and raw. In the present work several layers of pigment can be discerned; the build-up of translucent and opaque layers of paint creates a three-dimensionality that characterizes the artist’s strongest work. Furthermore, the work is highlighted by the deep swaths of black delineating the subject, representing a signature element of Rouault’s portraiture of this period.
