About the Item

“Jogo de Letras” Sculpture by Carlos Ramos, Portugal, 2025 Materials: Wood, Iron Height: Approx. 160 cm (63 in) Signed and dated by the artist Description This commanding contemporary sculpture by Portuguese artist Carlos Ramos is an arresting celebration of material and form. Executed in 2025, Jogo de Letras (Letter Game) showcases Ramos’s signature dialogue between iron and wood — a juxtaposition that has defined his practice for decades. Stacked blocks of richly textured, naturally fissured wood form a vertical totem, segmented by clusters of forged iron letters. These characters — abstract, scattered, and dynamic — do not compose words, but rather form visual compositions. They are not meant to be read, but to be seen, appreciated as sculptural strokes and rhythmic interplays of line and shadow. The iron letters float mid-air, suspended between the solid wood segments, evoking a tension between structure and disorder, mass and lightness. The warm tone of the wood contrasts beautifully with the raw, oxidized metal, highlighting the artist’s sensitivity to both material and balance. Carlos Ramos’s fascination with letters and language is evident in all his works — yet here, the alphabet becomes a sculptural medium, a plastic language that communicates through shape rather than meaning. Condition Excellent original condition. Signed and dated “C. Ramos 25” on the wood base. Notes A striking addition to contemporary interiors or curated collections. Carlos Ramos is increasingly recognized for his poetic manipulation of typography and matter — and this piece stands as a powerful, elegant example of his mature style.
