About the Item
Title: Hiding in The Jungle
Artist: Yang Qian (Chinese; B. 1959)
Medium: Oil on canvas
Years: purchased circa 1990
A Palm Beach, FL collection
An early work by Yang Qian during his sojourn in Florida, USA. The series delved into art history with reinterpretation and overlaying symbolism. The painting is set in a moody tropical jungle at night and is a clear reinterpretation and a dialogue between Henri Rousseau's The Dream and Paul Gauguin's La Femme du Roi. Although the two French artists were contemporaries, they may have not intersected in their personal lives. Pioneering and ground-breaking for their time, their work were celebrated posthumously and served as inspiration for later artists.

Brief Biography: Yang Qian, born in 1959 in Chengdu, China, is a member of the first generation of Contemporary artists from Mainland China. Yang attended the Sichuan Fine Art Institute from 1982 to 1984, before obtaining an MFA at the University of Florida, in the United States in 1988. He has held multiple teaching positions, and his work has been exhibited internationally at such institutions as the National Museum of China, Beijing; the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; and the Czech National Art Museum, Prague.
Yang works primarily with photography and painting, and there are often many layers of meaning contained within each piece of his art. His subjects vary, but are often female, with concepts drawn from everyday life. Yang’s art shifts between illusion and reality, playing with his viewer’s sense of perception. His more recent work continuously pushes the limits of two-dimensional painting, utilizing new media in his work, and departing from traditional painting and its limitations. In Yang’s Bathroom series, the subjects are often shrouded behind steam, and viewers observe them through a mirror that Yang has painted. There is a sense of realism, but also a carefully crafted layer of illusion and mystery. Yang has been highly praised for his innovative painting techniques, and he continues to live and work in Beijing.

Biography (Courtesy of Artsy)
Considered a leading ink painter, Qin Feng represents China’s avant-garde movement. Invited by the German government to curate an exhibition in Germany in order to promote cultural exchange between the two countries, Qin moved to Berlin in the ’90s where he began to fuse Western modernism and the Chinese ink tradition in abstract compositions. Feng uses traditional calligraphic materials but employs his brush with the unrestrained energy of the Abstract Expressionists. Inspired by his upbringing in Xinjiang, a multicultural intersection of the silk roads, Qin has incorporated Chinese, Uighur, Arabic, and Russian language into his work. In recent years, Qin has overlaid pieces of ancient Chinese furniture...

Contemporary Chinese Ink Wash Painting by Li Jin
Located in Atlanta, GA
A contemporary ink painting on paper by Chinese artist Li Jin (1958-) presented in a white shadowbox frame. Entitled in English "Morning Practice in California", this series of work was painted in 2017 when the artist resided in US. The Chinese title inscription is "Blossom Branch" with artist's name signed in both Chinese and English. The painting is considered "Expressionistic-abstract". Using only various shades of ink, the poetic work depicts a large lotus flower with the pistil in the center composed of clusters of mediating arhats, the beings who have gained nirvana through Buddhism practice (known as Luohans in Chinese). There is a strong association of lotus flower and purity in Buddhism. The wisdom one can possibly achieve may be considered omnipresent and morphogenetical quantum and be part of everything around us. The image size is 13.5" x 13.5".
Provenance: Purchased in 2017 from the Ink Studio at West Bund Art and Design Fair, Shanghai, China.
Li Jin (1958-, Tianjin, China) is an ink master who draws from the tradition of Chinese literati ink painting and creates contemporary works celebrating all aspects of everyday life. Having explored color washes for two decades, Li Jin has translated them into a masterful control of tonality-the "five colors of ink"-in a series of monochrome paintings in the expressionistic-abstract "Da Xie Yi" manner. Through the ink medium's inherent sensitivity and ambiguity, they evoke the nuances of human existence and raise profound questions about self-representation and subjectivity. Trained at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts (graduated in 1983) and has been a leading figure in contemporary Chinese ink art...
