For sale an original Estate-Stamped museum-quality Magnum photographic print by renowned American photographer, W. Eugene Smith. Titled 'Welsh Miners. Wales, Great Britain. 1950', the print is a time-limited Open Edition, that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The work is stamped by the artist's estate (verso) on an affixed archival label that carries the image’s accompanying text. It is mounted and presented in an elegant dark grey oak-wood veneered aluminium frame. The accompanying text reads: Welsh Miners. Wales, Great Britain. 1950. © The Heirs of W. Eugene Smith “In 1950, LIFE magazine sent W. Eugene Smith to cover the general election in Britain which pitted incumbent Labour Party Prime Minister Clement Attlee against resurgent former Conservative Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This striking image of three generations of Welsh miners, mired in hopelessness and poverty, symbolized the forgotten people whose lives Attlee’s policies sought to improve. His election in 1945 had represented a ‘turning point’ for them as Attlee and the Labour Party implemented broad social welfare programs across Great Britain. While Attlee narrowly defeated Churchill for a second time in 1950, his victory was short-lived. Deciding to call new elections a year later, Attlee lost to Churchill and the Conservatives in 1951. And the Welsh miners lost their champion. Describing the photograph, Smith later recounted: ‘I had my assistant call out to them. That’s why they had quizzical faces. They turned. I think I made two quick exposures and that was it.’” Kevin Eugene Smith, W. Eugene Smith Estate About the Artist: Called a fanatic of his craft and, often, "troublesome" by his editors, photographer and photojournalist W. Eugene Smith demanded such perfection of his images that he destroyed most of his early work. He began taking pictures at age 14, initially of airplanes, exploring an interest in aeronautical engineering. Smith went on to study photography at Notre Dame, followed by a job at Newsweek in 1937 (which he was fired from upon refusing to use a medium-format camera.) Smith liked the freedom of smaller cameras, which was particularly important in his combat photography during WWII, where he worked as diligent war correspondent—once hitchhiking 1200 miles to rush deliver film. Smith later helped define photojournalism through his work at Life magazine, and went on to join Magnum Magazine in 1955; he is remembered as a master both technically and in the darkroom. Titled "Pyongyang, North Korea. 1997", this Magnum print was a time-limited edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The work is signed to the back on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and is printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. The piece is mounted in a white lacquered frame. The accompanying text by the artist reads: “North Korea is maybe the most surreal country on Earth. Being there is like walking around on a film set.
