About the Item

19th century German, likely Berlin Iron Works, cast iron charger with mythological figures of goddesses, putti, various animals and fish in relief. The central medallion with cartouches of the first six months of the year, January through June. The outer rim decorated with figures of river goddesses holding symbols of that month's zodiac sign. Water for Aquarius, fish for Pisces, a ram for Aries, a Bull for Taurus, twins for Gemini and a crustacean for Cancer. With a round hallmark on the reverse as well as a ring for hanging. The hallmark indecipherable to my eye, but the quality and detail of this casting determined my attribution to Berlin Iron Works. Nice scale: 20.75 inches diameter The Royal Ironworks (1804) became an important presence in Berlin’s rapidly developing urban landscape, and the production of cast iron began transforming the fabric of the city. From major landmarks and monuments to small decorative articles for the sitting rooms of an expanding middle class, cast iron was increasingly the material of choice.
