Antique ca. middle of 19th hand - painted Russian Orthodox Icon of Saint Barbara / Святая Варвара. Tempera on Wood with Gilt elements. Abbreviated inscription in archaic Russian " Святая Великомученница Варвара " / Great Martyr Barbara. Text on the scroll , in archaic Russian translates " I believe in one God almighty , the creator of Heaven and Earth " Back side covered with period textile cloth. Measures : 27 cm x 22 cm. Overall fine condition with minor wear and insignificant loss of colors. Святая Варвара / Saint Barbara known in the Eastern Orthodox Church as the Great Martyr Barbara, was an early Christian Greek Saint and martyr. As one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, Barbara is a popular saint, perhaps best known as the patron saint of armourers, artillerymen, military engineers, miners and others who work with explosives because of her legend's association with lightning. She is also a patron saint of mathematicians. A 15th-century French version of her story credits her with thirteen miracles, many of which reflect the security she offered that her devotees would not die before getting to make confession and receiving extreme unction. Saint Barbara is venerated by all representatives of branches of Christian faith : the Church of the East, Oriental Orthodoxy, Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, etc. > > Most of the items that we sell at Atelier De Montplaisir are not new at all if not stated otherwise.
