About the Item
One of our absolute favourite posters ever! Original Polish cyrk (circus) poster featuring a fabulous Two Growling Tigers design by Wiktor Gorka, one of Poland's most celebrated poster artists. Gorka's design is, as with much of his work, cool, clean-cut and contemporary.
The ‘Cyrk” circus poster in Poland appeared for the first time in 1962 when the ZPR (Zjednoczone Przedsiębiorstwa Rozrywkowe, or United Entertainment Enterprises), the state agency that oversaw the circus, commissioned leading artists from the Polish School of Posters to develop a modern approach to the circus poster.
The ZPR wanted a new look for the circus poster to complement the circus’ efforts to upgrade its image. Not intended to advertise specific performances, they, rather, celebrated the essence of the circus through rich artistic expression with designs typically featuring clever metaphors, bold colours and humour. Heavy in symbolism, provocative and highly original the designs remain contemporary to this day and continue to gain appreciation.
Gorka's design was first printed in 1973, this original vintage poster is from its official 2nd print run in 1979. It's sized 26 1/8 x 38 inches and in fabulous rolled Excellent/ Near Mint condition. Light creasing on right hand edge.

Waldemar Swierzy (Poland, 1931 - 2013); born in Katowice, Poland, he graduated from the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts in 1952. He was subsequently Professor in the University of Fine Arts in Poznań from 1965 and Professor in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1994.
In 1992 the government of Poland issued a postage stamp to honor one of his Cyrk posters, 'Clown with derby'. Swierzy is one of the Polish School of Posters' most prolific artists, having created over 2500 posters.
He employed unusual concepts with a variety of techniques, frequently mirroring Polish social history from 1950s through 1980s, with a myriad of styles: folk art from the 50s, pop art from the 60s...
