Fratantoni Large Majolica Ceramic Wall Plaque with Fruits Decor, Italy 1950s-196
About the Item
Vintage large oval ceramic wall plaque or tile features Modernist abstract decor with branches of orange fruits and green and yellow leaves displayed on blue-green background. The oval shape of the plaque echoes soft lines rounded fruits and curling branches; hand-painted decor adds charm and individuality to the piece.
The plaque is marked on the back with "Ceramiche Fratantoni" and "Made in Italy" stamps, and signed by the artist on the lower right side of the tile. It is in good vintage condition with the original hanger attached on the back.
The Fratelli Fratantoni Company was founded in 1935 by Pietro, Saro, Edoardo and Nino, sons of a ceramic artist Don Filippo Fratantoni, in Santo Stefano di Camastra, Sicily, Italy. In the early years, the brothers dedicated themselves to the manual production of earthenware objects shaped on the lathe, and in 1970s they successfully tested and patented, first in Italy, the application of enamel decoration to the Etna lava basalt slabs. Ceramiche Fratantoni is still operating today; their most exclusive production is lava floors and traditional handmade tiles.

His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Vase with Relief Decor, Italy Mid Century
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze.
The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...
