Gold Mosaic Bird and Floral Design
About the Item
Gold and multicolored wall hanging mosaic artwork with an archaically inspired design. In the lower center, a vase, flanked by a white bird on each side. A floral and leaves design grows out of a vase. Signed and dated lower left: V. Aaltona -36.
Veikko Aaltona, (1910-1990) was a Finnish painter mainly active in Sweden. This is a very rare and early work from when he was studying in Italy 1936-1939. Veikko Aaltona painted mostly paintings with exotic landscapes with camels and palm trees or vaguely biblical figures. Very few mosaic works from his time in Italy exists.
Aaltona's studies of art began with his father who was also a painter. In 1934 Aaltona decided to study art more seriously and was accepted to the Fine Arts Academy of the University of the Arts in Helsinki. In the same year that he finished his studies in Finland in 1936, he traveled to Italy. There he studied between the years 1936-1939 at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and Venice. In Florence he studied at the La scuola del Nudo department and in Venice at the Department of Decorazione, where he learned to master the mosaic technique. Between 1946 and 1947 he completed his studies at the Royal Art Academy in Stockholm.
While studying in Florence, Aaltona met the Polish writer and artist Eleonora Hofstein and later got married with her in Poland 1939. The same year the World War II broke out and Aaltona left his family to participate in the Finnish Winter War.
In 1940 the family was reunited in Finland where Aaltona had his first exhibition in Helsinki. During the exhibition at the Helsinki Art Gallery, he exhibited four works, including a larger mosaic work depicting a story from the Finnish national epic Kalevala. For this mosaic work he received attention in the Finnish press. One of the other works in the same exhibition was "Maisema Kainuusta" (Landscape from Kainu) for which he was awarded the Dukat Prize of the Finnish Art Association.
In the early 1940s, Aaltona was active with exhibitions and held a number of them in Helsinki until 1946 when he moved to Stockholm.
The following year, Aaltona held a solo exhibition in Stockholm. At this point, Aaltona's paintings had clearly changed in character from the objects he exhibited in the early 1940s in Helsinki.
Aaltonas best work is from his early period in the 30´s and the early 40´s.
This is a a very beautifully executed and decorative piece. We also have another mosaic by Aaltona in similar colors but a different design, also posted on 1stdibs.
