About the Item

An extraordinary 19th-century Tibetan monastery door panel, dating to circa 1890, originally used as a chamber door for monks. This unique piece is a vibrant expression of Himalayan artistry, deeply rooted in the iconography and symbolism of Tibetan Buddhism. Expertly hand-painted on carved wood, the panel features a stunning arched top and a vividly composed palette of earthy green, deep red, and golden ochre tones. At the center, ornate botanical scrollwork radiates in symmetrical patterns, flanked by two mythical guardian lions—protective figures commonly depicted in Tibetan religious art. The lions, painted in dynamic mirror image, appear mid-roar, their bodies outlined in ochre and red, symbolizing strength and sacred vigilance. The surface reveals age-old brushwork with expressive, freehand lines and details drawn directly into the pigment, lending a tactile, almost fresco-like character to the wood. The visual language echoes the traditional decorative arts of central Tibet, with flame motifs, floral medallions, and intricate border detailing enhancing its ceremonial power. The piece has been preserved through a conservative restoration, maintaining its original paint, structure, and patina. It can now be mounted as a decorative wall panel, and is ready to hang thanks to the original forged iron handles located on the reverse. This panel is not only a work of spiritual and cultural heritage, but also a rare and powerful decorative statement. It is sold with a certificate of authenticity confirming its provenance.
