About the Item

This is an old farming tool believed to have been used in Japanese rural households between the Meiji period and early Showa era. Originally, it served as a container for storing plant seeds and other small agricultural materials. The main body is made from a large, matured hyotan (gourd), a natural material traditionally used in Japanese rural life. Over many decades, the surface has developed unique mottled patterns and a soft luster, resulting in a texture that resembles abstract art painted by nature itself. This kind of patina, born only through the passage of time, imparts a richness and depth that cannot be replicated by artificial means—expressing the quiet beauty of wabi-sabi. Though once a purely practical object, this piece has been repurposed into a flower vase that embraces its original form. Inside, a bamboo insert has been fitted, with a natural node located about 17 cm deep. This node serves as the water level, allowing fresh flowers to be arranged with ease. Despite its large and commanding presence, the gourd is lightweight at approximately 0.95 kg, making it easy to hang on a wall. Using the attached cord, it can be displayed effortlessly, adding a warm and organic accent to any room. Its presence alone can become a focal point in your interior. Gourds like this are no longer produced for farming use in modern times, making this a valuable cultural artifact that speaks to the agricultural life and traditions of rural Japan. As old farmhouses disappear and handmade rural tools become increasingly rare, encountering a piece like this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is a piece we hope will be passed on to someone with a deep appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and countryside culture. Its humble form pairs beautifully with Japanese modern interiors, natural-material design, or even gallery-like spaces. The quiet presence it brings carries memories of a bygone era while continuing to embody timeless beauty. We hope this piece will resonate with you and that its story will continue into the next generation. Weight: 0.95 kg Item No.:ob294

Japanese Antique Pottery Hanging Vase/Edo/1800s/Boat-Shaped Vase
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This is a black-glazed boat-shaped pottery made in the late Edo period of Japan. This will be a hanging vase. Pour water directly into this and decorate the flowers. Also, perhaps this is a pottery called Seto-yaki. Seto is an ancient kiln located in Aichi Prefecture. Various shapes and colors were produced there, and in the late Edo period, dark glazed pottery was also produced. When a dark brown glaze is applied, the areas with thick glaze look black, and the areas with thin glaze look brown. I put water directly into this and left it for a day, but there was no water leakage. I would say it is in very good condition. Although it is a small item, it has a very strong presence. It has a glossy and elegant appearance. There are many types of Seto pottery...
