About the Item
This is an old piece of Japanese washi paper. On the reverse side, the characters “明治三十年” can be seen, indicating it was made in 1897.
While its exact use is uncertain, the presence of kakishibu (persimmon tannin) coating on the surface suggests it was likely used as a moisture-resistant underlay, or possibly as wrapping for an item.
Across the entire sheet are traces of children practicing writing—countless characters drawn with free, unrestrained strokes. Over time, these have gently blurred, taking on a geometric and abstract quality. The folds, discoloration, and repair marks are all important elements that speak to its long history.
When displayed on a wall, it exudes a unique presence as an art piece that transcends time, embodying the distinctly Japanese spirit of wabi-sabi.
