Japanese painted and lacquered wooden fan with mother-of-pearl inlays
About the Item
The fan is made of painted and then lacquered wood, inlaid with mother-of-pearl elements.
The scene depicted features three maidens in the foreground, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing, probably as they are returning home. Behind them is a typical Oriental structure surrounded by low walls, which enclose its garden. These elements are made of mother-of-pearl, as are also some plant elements surrounding them and some decorations near the fan handle.
The other parts of the image depicted are paintings: some other plant elements and in the background above the sun, which would appear to be at dusk, with a flock of birds flying toward the horizon.
The item is beautifully crafted and beautifully decorated. The color combinations are very pleasing, with a predominance of carmine red contrasting with the cool colors of mother-of-pearl.
