About the Item

This is a huge heavy wood mounted mural made of Portuguese “Azulejos” or white and blue tiles. It depicts an 18th century scene at the Apothecary Shop and Laboratory where at the right side, there is a pharmacist gentleman behind the wood counter talking to a male client while trying to hold a scroll . At the left side behind the counter, there is a female laboratory technician holding a pestle with one hand near a mortar and measuring some powder in the scale while another male client is waiting in front of the counter. A wide tall wood column divides the right area from the left one. The walls are decorated with arched shelving filled with Majolica apothecary jars, except the one behind the pharmacist that is a large wood apothecary cabinet with drawers of different sizes and shelves. The counters also show cups, jars, and others apothecary jars. The floor is made of black and white squared tiles. The scene is framed with light blue C-scrolls adorned at the middle top with a crowned cartouche depicting “La coupe d’ hygie” and at bottom area with another one with a flower in the center. A large dragon enhances each one of the top sides above the frame. Long branches of scrolls of acanthus leaves decorate around the frame together with a large rosettes at each corner of the bottom area.
