Late 17th C John Stalkers "A Treatise of Japanning & Varnishing" Engravings

About the Item

A collection of six copper plate engravings from John Stalkers "A Treatise of Japanning & Varnishing" 1688. Framed in modern faux bamboo frames, each engraving depicts distinct patterns with instructions for Japan work for tables, frames, cabinets and boxes. The original book contained 24 engravings along with the best way of making all sorts of varnish for Japan, wood, prints, plate, or pictures, the method of guilding, burnishing and lackering. Unfortunately the original binding is rare to find complete, as the authors suggest that owners remove the patterns for use as transfers. Each engraving is heavily foxed, with small losses and imperfections to all sides, some small minor tears. Each frame is 30/43cm.

Late 17th/Early 18th Century Polychrome Tobacconist Figure Sign Folk Art Carving
Located in Lowestoft, GB
A large carved and polychrome painted tobacconist's figure almost certainly 17th or early 18th century For a related example see Edward H. Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones, Bell and Hyman, London 1969. Page 412, plate 436. Originally this may well have been a tobacconist's shop window figure. For a similar, but slightly earlier unpainted example, see Sotheby's, The W. J. Shepherd collection of treen, 30th November 1983, Lot 393, illustrated in Pinto "Wooden Bygones of Smoking and Snuff Taking", plate 1. Carved wooden figures, often painted, were placed outside tobacconist's shops as signs from the 17th century onwards. The earliest of these figures is the 'black boy' or 'blackamoor'. 'At the sign of the black boy' or 'at the sign of the blackamoor' was a popular address for tobacconists since the early 17th century. The 17th century figures...

An oil on canvas portrait of a young French courtier, circa 1690. This evocative antique French-school picture has been attributed to the portrait painter Jean-François de Troy (1679-1752). De Troy was famous as a portrait painter of fashionable society women. This is a very attractive late-17th century painting surviving in its original frame and stretcher. The canvas appears to be untouched. References: 'Jean François de Troy, The Alarm, or the Gouvernante Fidèle', at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
