About the Item
Decorative hand-decorated vintage modern ceramic wall plate or centerpiece, designed by Italian artist Giovanni De Simone and produced by his workshop, note the worn manufacturer's adhesive label on the back, Italy 1950s
Giovanni De Simone (1930 - 1991)
was an Italian ceramist. Trained in Faenza, where he attended the Art Institute for Ceramics, in Palermo he opened the workshop "Maioliche d'Arte De Simone" in the 1950s, where he devoted himself to the production of traditional and hand-painted utility ceramics and decorative wall and furniture tiles. He became over the years one of the leading representatives of Sicilian ceramics.
His evolution as an artist later led him to create works inspired by primitivism but characterized by a burlesque and festive vein with brightly colored enamel decorations, often given thickly, as furnishings and majolica sculptures in traditional and modern styles. A retrospective exhibition was dedicated to him in 2019 at the Botanical Gardens of Palermo.
