A Pair of Decorative Leather Painted Panels

About the Item

A very large and impressive pair of painted leather panels possibly depicting the 'Battle of Cannae'. 18th or early 19th Century It is believed that these panels were possibly originally with a family member at Soldon Manor, Devon. The Battle of Cannae was a key engagement of the Second Punic War between the Roman Republic and Carthage. It is regarded as one of the greatest tactical feats in military history and one of the worst defeats in Roman history. The battle cemented Hannibal Barca’s reputation as one of antiquity’s greatest tacticians.
