About the Item
Rare Mid Century Modern decorative tile was made by Mosaic Tile Company in Zanesville, OH. The tile depicts two birds sitting on a branch, looking in the same direction. The birds are done in abstract style graphic in monochrome beige brown color on lightly textured cream background. The tile is glazed all the way around and on the back; it was never mounted, but it had soft feet and a hook attached on the back to be used as a wall decor or as a table decor.
The tile is signed on the back with underglaze Mosaic logo and Made in USA.
The tile is signed on the back with underglaze Mosaic logo and Made in USA. It is attributed to Kenneth Gale (1908-1990), a renowned tile designer and long-time artistic director at the Mosaic Tile Company, who designed and overseed many original projects for the company, from single tile designs to large murals and other custom projects, such as the largest set of mosaics in the world created during the Great Depression in 1936-1937 for public artwork project. One of his best-known projects was a set of commemorative decorative ceramic tiles, based on architect William D. Hargroves's pen and ink drawings that President Roosevelt personally examined and approved of; the Deft-like tiles were produced for the White House library fireplace in the 1940s and removed in the 1960s during Kennedy Era White House renovation projects.
Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville, Ohio, was started by Karl Langenbeck and Herman Mueller in 1894. It employed many well-known artists, including Ruth Axline and Gordon Mull, who also worked at Weller; Sydney Cope, who also worked at Nelson McCoy pottery; Robert Hartshorne, Herman Mueller, Alfred Nicklin, Harry Northrup, who also worked for American Encaustic Tiling Company, and Harry Ayres, Horace Langley, and Charles Lenhart. Harry Rhead of Roseville pottery worked at Mosaic supervising production of faience tiles from 1922 to 1923 before moving on to Standard Tile Company. Mosaic was creating various types of plain and ornamental tiles until 1959; it closed in 1967.

His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
