Salvador Terán Mexican MCM Mosaic Lady's Portrait

About the Item

A wall mosaic depicting the profile of a woman by Mexican silversmith, furniture designer and sculptor Salvador Terán. The mosaic is made with brownish and white stones. It is signed on a plaque SALVADOR 72. It is mounted on a wood frame with black fabric with a brass edge. Mosaic's dimensions: 41 x 31 cm. Frame's dimensiones: 55 x 45 cm. Born in Taxco, Salvador Vaca Terán (1920 - 1974) began his career in the 1930's as an apprentice under William Spratling along his cousins, the Castillo brothers, in the legendary Las Delicias workshop. He worked under his cousins in Los Castillo as a shop manager from 1939 until 1952, the same year he moved to Mexico City to open his own shop, La India Bonita. His work on mixed metals and mosaics can be seen on trays, tables and wall decorations. His main inspirations come from Pre-Columbian art and feature bold geometric shapes and patterns.
