About the Item

Drawing, wash and ink on paper. River Landscape with a couple and a dog in the foreground and windmills and farmers in the background, in the manner of Nicolaes Wicart. Set in a 19th Century lemon gold American frame. The scene captures a moment of daily life in a Dutch landscape in all its serenity, with windmills reflected in the water, trees framing the composition and a path leading into the distance, adding to the idyllic rural setting. The presence of windmills and the overall style are characteristic of the Dutch landscape tradition that flourished in the 17th and 18th Century. Wicart (1748-1815) is particularly well known for his drawings depicting tranquil river scenes near his native Utrecht. His works are held in some of the most important art museums in the world, including the British Museum. The dimensions include the frame. The sight dimensions of the drawing are 11 1/2in. wide and 9 3/8in. high.
