About the Item

A very good 19th century American Classical Period / Empire Period scissor-cut silhouette by Auguste Edouart, depicting the full length figure of a prominent New York gentleman with spectacles in hand, gazing out the window from a partially hand-coloured parlour interior. Set within its original & highly figured bird's eye maple frame & burnished gilt fillet. Signed & dated lower left, 'Aug. Edouart, fecit 1845, 369 Broadway, New York'. The reverse referencing a family provenance purportedly associated with a collection having once belonged to a Civil War officer by the name of Nathan Hale, thence by descent to a family member having resided in Ottawa, Canada. Sight dimensions: 11.5" high x 8.25" wide, frame dimensions: 16.75" high x 13.75". Auguste Edouart (1789-1861), is regarded as one of the finest and most highly acclaimed silhouette artists of the 19th century. Born in France, he later moved to London in 1814 where he began making wax portraits, then in 1825 he began working solely as a silhouette artist. He later travelled to America, where he worked from approximately 1839 until 1849 making commissioned silhouettes for some of the most prominent families in Boston, New York & Philadelphia, as well as in some major cities in the Southeast. Further information on Auguste Edourat can be found in Andrew Oliver's book, "Auguste Edouart's Silhouettes of Eminent Americans, 1839-1844".
