About the Item

Although the Olympics in 1928 were held in Amsterdam, Lee Seibert drew this vivid and colorful image of the main entrance to the stadium as if it were in America, the sky glowing with a rainbow-hued aureole and the scene attracting sophisticated men and women in evening clothes. Indeed, the 1932 Olympics, held in Los Angeles, featured an arched entrance not unlike this one. Seibert created this image while a student at Penn State University, and later went on to work for Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Vultee Aircraft Corporation. He eventually became a partner at Muhlenberg Brothers, a firm in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. This drawing is executed in pastel; dimensions include the frame.

"Progress of Civilization" Art Deco Masterpiece by Muralist Aiden Lassell Ripley
By Aiden Lassell Ripley
Located in Philadelphia, PA
In this remarkable drawing, famed muralist Lassell Ripley depicts primitive man, warming himself by the fire with little to wear, looking into the distance toward the bright, white Art Deco spires of modern civilization. The contrast of early mankind with the advances of 1930s America is inspiring and beautiful, and Ripley clearly draw this to prepare for a mural project, probably unexecuted. Ripley is best known for his sportsman paintings, highly collectible today, but early in his career he became known for his murals, including several depicting the life of Paul Revere for the post office in Lexington...
