"Child in Fire, " Classic Drawing by Willy Pogany

About the Item

One of the most important illustrators and designers of his day, Willy Pogany circulated among some of the world's greatest celebrities, including George Bernard Shaw, William Randolph Hearst, Enrico Caruso and the Barrymore family. Pogany created this image for "The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles," a hugely successful compilation of mythological tales by Padraic Colum, originally published in 1921 but still in print today. Pogany captures the Grecian woman with grace and economy of line, as well as the child who is engulfed in flame but not consumed. The drawing is dedicated "To Junger from his friend." (Visible image is 9.5" high by 7.5" wide.)

A classic example of 1930s drawing showing the influence of Cubism and Art Deco design, this depiction of a nude couple standing in a landscape with fractured hills and clouds was created by Glidden Parker, most famous for his influence on modern ceramics and home design. Parker's stripped-down, geometric forms for tableware and decorative ware became widely popular in the 1940s and 1950s, and his earliest pieces sometimes have Art Deco decorative motifs. This drawing precedes the establishment of Glidden Pottery...
