One of the pioneers in experimental ink painting, Pan Ying was born in Beijing in 1962. Her father is the famous oil painter, Pan Shixun, while her mother is the Chinese traditional ink painter, Jiang Caping. Her family background has been especially important in her development as an artist as she was given the unusual opportunity to be exposed to both Western and Chinese painting methods from a young age. She attended the Art Institute of the People's Liberation Army and majored in Chinese traditional ink painting, from where she graduated in 1983. She received her Ph.D. in 2006 from the
Central University for Nationalities, where she is currently an associate professor and graduate advisor.
