Late 17th Century Italian Ink and Wash Drawing of “The Drunken Silenus"

About the Item

This work likely Italian dates from circa 1680-1700. It relates directly to a 16th century engraving of the same subject after a drawing by Giulio Romano. That composition is inspired by a sarcophagus representing the Triumph of Baccus and Ariadne. An example of the engraving circa 1531 is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. By an unattributed hand but clearly by an artist capable of the medium of ink and wash drawing a rather unforgiving technique and well scaled and executed. The work is nicely French matted and framed in an antique Italian gilded wood frame complimenting the work.
