About the Item
This important, beautifully rendered drawing of a reclining male nude figure was made by Edward Wolfe, who was born in South Africa but spent much of his career in Great Britain in the company of Duncan Grant and other celebrated gay artists. A year after arriving in England in 1916, Roger Fry invited Wolfe to join the Omega Workshops, where he painted and designed furniture with strong colors influenced by the Fauvist movement. Wolfe connected to Grant and the Bloomsbury Group where, he said, his ‘life really began." Wolfe's work is held in the collections of the Tate Gallery, the Royal Academy, the National Portrait Gallery, London and the Dixson Galleries in Australia. The drawing is on a warm, pale brown paper, and is signed in the lower righthand corner. The drawing has been auctioned several times over the years, and old labels remain on the reverse. Dimensions include the matte and frame; visible drawing is 13 inches high by 17 inches wide.

"Sleeping Nude, Arms Akimbo, " Masterful Drawing by Allyn Cox, Capitol Muralist
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Confident and masterful, this drawing of a male nude leaning back into a chair, fast asleep, with his arms thrown in every direction, was made by Allyn Cox, probably as a study for one of his murals. Cox spent 20 years painting and restoring murals at the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. starting in 1952; among his accomplishments was painting the Frieze of American history and restoring the apotheosis of Washington in the Rotunda. He also designed murals for three first-floor corridors in the House wing, now called the Cox Corridors. Here he uses pencil on paper to demonstrate his mastery of the human figure. He was the son of Kenyon Cox...

Cox spent 20 years painting and restoring murals at the US Capitol...
