About the Item

This fine and very early drawing by John B. Lear shows the care with which he captured the beauty, strength and character of the men he admired. Lear's earliest works are often in oil, but later he moved to watercolor, pencil and colored pencil. He retained a fascination with the male nude, though his depiction of the male figure changed over the years -- from long and lean bodies, as here, to stockier figures in later years. Lear liked to depict his figures in fantastic or exotic environments such as the circus, carnival, deserted beach, or Dali-esque setting. A contemporary of Paul Cadmus, and like him, highly focused on depicting the male figure in various settings and positions, Lear never gained fame beyond his circle of admirers in the Philadelphia area. However, Lear is having a moment now, and his works are increasingly sought after by collectors. The piece is pencil on warm yellow paper, and is signed and dated. Dimensions include matte and frame; visible drawing is 11.25 inches high by 8 inches wide.

"Sleeping Nude, Arms Akimbo, " Masterful Drawing by Allyn Cox, Capitol Muralist
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Confident and masterful, this drawing of a male nude leaning back into a chair, fast asleep, with his arms thrown in every direction, was made by Allyn Cox, probably as a study for one of his murals. Cox spent 20 years painting and restoring murals at the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. starting in 1952; among his accomplishments was painting the Frieze of American history and restoring the apotheosis of Washington in the Rotunda. He also designed murals for three first-floor corridors in the House wing, now called the Cox Corridors. Here he uses pencil on paper to demonstrate his mastery of the human figure. He was the son of Kenyon Cox...
