A fine and bold drawing by William Littlefield, this piece depicts male and female nude figures in an embrace, the male figure inspired by Nicholas Podiapolski, Littlefield's model and lover in the late 1920s. Littlefield is known for his male nudes and mythological scenes, either in ink wash as here, or in oil on canvas. This drawing was completed in St. Tropez, during an extended stay in Europe that gave him a close acquaintance with Italian and other classical art.
