About the Item

The history of La Catrina begins during the governments of Benito Juárez, Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada and Porfirio Díaz. In these periods, texts written by the middle class began to become popular that criticized both the general situation of the country and that of the privileged classes. The writings, written in a mocking manner and accompanied by drawings of skulls and skeletons, began to be reproduced in the so-called combat newspapers. These were skulls dressed in gala clothes, drinking pulque, riding horses, at high society or neighborhood parties. All to portray the misery, political errors, hypocrisy of a society, as is the case of "La Catrina". The word "catrín" defined an elegant and well-dressed man, accompanied by some lady with the same characteristics; this style was a classic image of the Mexican aristocracy of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. That is why, by giving him a dress of that type, Diego Rivera turned "La Calavera Garbancera" into "La Catrina" in his work. On the Day of the Dead festivity, people dress up as catrinas and catrines in the Mexico City Parade Valeria López Gálvez, 2001 Mexico City. She studies photography at the CDMX Active School of Photography. Since she was a child, she had an interest in cinema and photography, this led her to express herself through photography in a more artistic and contemporary context. She has implemented manual and digital techniques in her work, she has also participated in exhibitions within her school; she has professionally photographed pieces for art projects. She is currently participating in the 2021 LensCulture Portrait Award photography contest.
