About the Item

Enos A. Mills Photograph, "End of the Trail," c1921, Sepia Toned Silver Print. The print is blind stamped on the lower right "©, Enos A Mills, 1921." The horse was named 'Cricket,' he was Mills' personal horse. Enos Abijah Mills (April 22, 1870 – September 21, 1922) was an American naturalist, author and homesteader. He was the main figure behind the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park. Mills became a naturalist after a meeting John Muir in California. Taking his desire to become an advocate back to Colorado, He was able to convince the U.S. Government to establish the Rocky Mountains as a national park in 1915. Mills became known as “The Father of the Rocky Mountain National Park.” He traveled throughout the Rocky Mountains for years, communing with animals rather than killing them for food or safety. He operated the Longs Peak House as a summer place of respite for writers, publicists, and other intelligentsia. It was considered the Roycroft of the Rocky Mountains. Mills was appointed government lecturer by President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a talented photographer and his images of the Rocky Mountains, taken with his Kodak Pocket camera, are photos of locals in Rocky Mountain National Park never before photographed. "Cricket, A Mountain Pony" was a book by Enos A. Mills and it includes photographs including the classic "The End of the Trail." The preface is by his wife Esther Burnell Mills, (August 1889–April 8, 1964). She was an American pioneer and homesteader in Estes Park, Colorado. Esther and her sister became the National Park Service's first certified nature guides. She married Enos Mills in 1918. The photo is 19.5" x 11.5", the mat is 23.25" x 15".
