About the Item

Jean Baptiste Deyrolle founded the Deyrolle in 1831. After nine generations of master tapestry weaving, Jean Baptiste and his son Achille set out from their family to pursue the natural sciences of entomology and taxidermy. In 1834, the shop rose to fame when Achille oversaw the preservation of a Ceylonese Elephant (Pachyderm taxidermy is known to be one of the most difficult and intricate forms of taxidermy to master). In 1888, Achille's son Emile united the family's collection and moved the Deyrolle to its current prestigious location, 46 Rue du Bac. For 120 years the Deyrolle flourished, selling everything from butterflies and beetles to big game animals, scientific equipment, and centuries old pedagogic prints. In the early hours of February 1, 2008, the stuffed menagerie was destroyed in a massive conflagration. Hundreds of firefighters, policemen, and soldiers combined in their efforts to save this place of pilgrimage, but close to nothing was salvaged. Since then, owner Prince Louis Albert de Broglie has worked vigorously to bring the beloved Deyrolle back to its former glory. With the help of esteemed contributors such as Christie's Europe, Hermes, and countless other museums and collectors, the Deyrolle has been born again as the cabinet de curiosites it has been known as for over 150 years. William Curtis Rolf has been granted exclusive permission on several occasions to photograph the magical creatures at the Deyrolle. Given the freedom to stage the animals as he wished, William was able to create beautiful images with amazing atmosphere and a touch of whimsy. Voila! discovered the photographs of William Curtis Rolf in 2008 and has since followed his works. In 2014 an exhibition of these works will be shown at voila! to celebrate a book collaboration between William Curtis Rolf and Katrien van der Schueren on the mystical imaginarium that is Deyrolle.
